Scan for any dents or scratches on the surface of the camera indicating whether it's been dropped or misused. And probably more important is whether it has an owner's manual. Modern cameras come with many features and you will need the manual to know how to operate it to it's full potential.
There has never been a better time to pick up a top of the range digital camera at a bargain price. Cameras that were being sold for thousands of dollars a couple of years ago are now selling for hundreds. Shop around and you are bound to get the camera you want.
