How To Use Camera Filter Systems

A camera filter system allows photographers to become creative and to experiment with the effects they present. Although it is now possible to digitally manipulate images at the post-processing stage and even to mimic the effects of some types of filters, there is arguably nothing more pleasing than seeing the effects of filtered light before it hits the camera's sensor.

There are two types of camera filter systems: slot-in filters and screw-in filters. The former are square or rectangular pieces of glass, or optical resin, which slot into a filter holder that is attached to the camera lens. The latter are circular, and simply screw into the front of the lens.

Slot-In Filters

The chief reason why these filters are very popular is because the same filters and holder can be used with any lens. Adapter rings of various thread sizes fit onto the filter holder, and the holder can be released and attached with a different size ring, thus allowing the photographer to swap filters between lenses.

In fact, a holder can support two or even three filters at once, making it possible to be creative with them. These slot-in filter systems are very cost-effective, although they are not cheap.

For DSLR and Film SLR cameras there are 67 mm, 85 mm, and 100 mm slot-in filter holders. But the bigger the holder, the more expensive the holder and the filters will be, but the risk of vignetting is progressively reduced. The smaller system is not really compatible with short focal lengths.

Screw-In Filters

In order to use these filters you have to obtain them in diameters that fit your lenses. So if you have 58 mm and 77 mm lenses, say, you will have to obtain a 58 mm and a 77 mm screw-in filter. Clearly it is impracticable as well as uneconomical to acquire a set of screw-in filters for each different thread size.

So what is the solution? Well, you can use step-down rings. These rings allow a lens's thread size to accommodate larger filters to fit lenses with a smaller diameter. The downside to this is that you have to obtain a set of filters that fit the largest diameter lens in you lens system, and in the majority of cases it means investing in filters of 77 mm or 82 mm in size. Unfortunately, filters of this size are costly and heavy. Step-up rings attach smaller filters to larger diameter lenses, but are less practical.

And there is another downside in relying on screw-in filters: you are stuck with the fixed graduation zone.

It is possible to use filters on compact cameras, too, even though they have no threaded lens. You can now obtain specific filter holders that attach to any compact camera via the screw thread at the base that is used to attach the camera to a tripod. Some can hold up to four filters at any one time.

Using Camera RAW

Digital cameras typically produce one of two types of files -- JPGs or RAW files. Most amateurs work with JPGs while most professionals prefer to work with RAW files.

Here's why:

JPG files are small and can be handled by most commercial programs, even those inexpensive ones you find at Wall Mart and Staples. They are small because they are created by a process called lossy compression. This means that some of the original data is lost, even removed, when the file is created and compressed. If the level of compression is set too high it can cause a real deterioration in image quality (you get to choose the level of compression both inside your camera - the image quality setting - and by using a program such as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements where you will be able to choose the degree of compression applied to your corrected image, usually between a range of 1 to 12, 12 being the least amount of compression).

The reason most programs can read and load JPGs is that they have long been the publishing industry's standard format. The JPG is also the standard format used on the web. So, as you can see, JPG files are very convenient and easy to use. And yes, they can be and are reproduced in glossy magazines. One more thing: each time you save a JPG image you lose a little more quality until finally the image becomes virtually useless. As I already mentioned, small JPG images of less than 100k in size are fine for web use. A computer screen is set up to handle no more than 72 dots per inch (no, I'm not going to get into that here) while publication quality digital images (for newspapers and glossy magazines) require 300 dots per inch. The JPG file can easily handle both applications.

But here's the thing: when your digital camera saves an image in JPG format all of the in-camera settings - color balance, color temperature, white balance, sharpening and so on - are processed by the camera and placed into the file for you. In essence the camera says to itself, "this is what I think he/she would the image to look like, and most of the time it gets it pretty darned close. And this is not necessarily a bad thing because you can still change all of those elements, be it to a somewhat limited degree, in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, but when you do the quality of the image will deteriorate significantly.

RAW files are created by your camera in a proprietary format, unique to each camera manufacturer. They can even be unique to the specific camera model you are using. These files are compressed by using a lossyless system. This means that little or no information is lost during the act of compression. So, when you shoot a RAW format file, there will be no in-camera processing. There will be no sharpening, no color balance applied, no white balance: the camera has made none of those decisions for you as it does when it generates a JPG file. As I said earlier, what you have in a RAW file is essentially the digital camera's equivalent of a "negative." No, there is no reversal of the image. What you have is just an entirely complete original.

And what does all this mean to us? Well, when you work on a RAW file in Photoshop you are working with a much higher quality original than you would if it were a JPG file. You will also have greater control, which means more creativity, when you make your adjustments, corrections and manipulations, and you will not significantly degrade the quality of resulting image. The first time it will be compressed is when you save it as a JPG file, or whatever other file format you choose (such as a TIF).

RAW file formats are unique so we need to use a special program to process them. All digital camera manufacturers provide special software for processing their own RAW files. Often these programs come free with the camera. The best programs for dealing with these files, though, are offered as plug-ins for such industry standards as Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Another advantage of using the RAW file is that, other than deleting it, you can't corrupt it. You must save the altered image as either a JPG file or in some other format. Be warned though: always copy your RAW files to CDs or DVDs for archiving. Then, as new and more improved processing software becomes available, you will always have them on hand whenever you feel the need to work on them again.

What are board cameras?

Board cameras have a variety of uses, depending on your wants and needs.  In most cases, though, they are mounted in order to work as spy or hidden cameras.  As long as you know exactly what to do with a board camera, you'll be able to choose one (or a few) that has the features that will work best for you.

The most basic thing you should consider regarding a board camera or any camera for that matter is the lens.  The lens is pre-mounted on a board camera and the iris is usually fixed.  That means you cannot zoom in or out without an additional device or accessory.  Lenses can also be pinhole type or full.

Pinholes, like their name suggests, are small lenses and are perfect for use as spy cameras.  You can mount these on a table clock, a lamp, a baseball cap or even a teddy bear.  Full lenses are bigger and will work well on dome or mini cameras to complete your surveillance system.

If you plan to use a board camera for surveillance, you have an option as to whether you prefer to view activities in black and white or color.  There are also lenses that afford you low-light viewing, usually indicated as a low Lux count.  A good Lux count would be at least 0.05, although there are others that can go as low as 0.0003.  The low number means that the board camera lens will still work in near total darkness.  Resolution is also a key feature to look into when considering board camera usage.  Videos of activities are much easier to view if the images are crisp and sharp.

The Kodak Camera - Then And Now!

In the late 1800s George Eastman of Rochester, New York was making photographic equipment including a small box camera with a new kind of picture taking material called roll film. By 1888, Eastman patented this small box camera under the name Kodak.

Eastman coined the word Kodak from no other word or no other meaning to avoid any trademark problems. His Kodak camera was introduced in June 1888 and sold for about $25.00. Each camera came with roll film that would take 100 pictures. After taking 100 pictures the owners would return the Kodak Camera and $10.00 to the Eastman factory for development. The pictures and Kodak camera with a new roll of film inserted would then be returned to the owner. Kodak camera owners would receive a 2 1/2 inch circular print mounted on heavy cardboard. Eastman's advertising slogan for this Kodak Camera was "You press the button, we do the rest." In nice condition, a vintage original Kodak costing $25.00 in the late 1800s would sell for several thousand dollars today.

How to Use Camera RAW in PHOTO-PAINT X4

Bringing Camera RAW Files into Corel PHOTO-PAINT

When you select one or more Camera RAW files, they show up in PHOTO-PAINT in the Camera RAW Lab. It's here that you can adjust the color and tone. Adjustments made to one file can be applied to all images.

Before You Begin

Here are few things to know about working with Camera RAW images.

A common characteristic of Camera RAW files is that they are flat, dull and soft. In a processed image, such as a JPEG, these issues are taken care of for you. Processing in-camera means that the camera has taken care of certain settings for you, such as white balancing, sharpening, color correction, compression, etc.

When evaluating an image, it's important to use the histogram. Doing so will show you important information about what's happening with the image itself.

When you save a Camera RAW image after processing a good choice is TIFF, partly because it's been around for many years and is a stable format. If you decide to use JPEG, be aware that it's a "lossy" format and if you compress the images you will lose image information. In practice, I recommend that you use JPEG with the maximum quality setting (to prevent image degradation) and to save an image as a TIFF, as well. More information is in Chapter 13: Understanding Web Page Graphics and File Compression. Note that shooting at the highest resolution will take up a lot of space on your camera's card. Also, saving images as a JPEG is not a true indication of the file size.

Note: All the images used in The Corel PHOTO-PAINT X4 Insider were shot using the Canon G9, which is now supported by the Service Pack 1 release. I shot all images at a resolution of 4032 x 3024. Files of this size can be taxing on the processor, so if you apply a change and it doesn't happen right away, please be patient.

Additional Notes

Converting a RAW file opens a TIFF file in PHOTO-PAINT. An original RAW file cannot be saved over by PHOTO-PAINT. And even though you can apply settings to subsequent files, you cannot save the setting for later use on the original file or any other files.

Digital Camera Lessons - Using Cameras to Teach the Alphabet in Early Childhood

Teaching and learning the alphabet is a huge part of early childhood. Only after beginning to make sense of the letters and their sounds can a child begin to understand the world of print.

Cameras can help cement the understanding of the letters in many ways. In addition, children become enthusiastic about learning when they get to hold and use the cameras.

The most common way to teach the alphabet with cameras is to find objects that begin with each letter and compile either a class book, individual book, or bulletin board. We would see a photo of an apple, an acorn, and Ashley for the letter A. Some letters will be tricky unless you have an x-ray or xylophone hanging around! One method would be to make a page for each letter of the alphabet and then give each child a page to work on at home. Or, go on a scavenger hunt as a class and take turns taking pictures of the objects you find along the way. (Note: it is best to have the entire alphabet written down on a piece of paper, and then write down which object is for each letter. That will also help you keep track of what letters you still need to find objects to represent.)

Another more abstract way to illustrate the alphabet is to look for the shape of the letters. For instance, the wheel or steering wheel would be the letter O. An edge of a cement block or a hockey stick could make the letter L. The criss cross of a wicker chair back would show the letter x. Two fence slats with the parallel support bar in the middle could be the letter H.

The Living Alphabet is a way to involve everyone in the class. Break the class into groups of 4 or 5 children. Assign a letter to each group. Have the children lay down on the floor to make the capital letter. Take a photo. Have that group also write a tongue twister for the letter (for the more advanced.) It  is best to keep a list of the complete alphabet and check off each letter as you photograph it so you know which letters are left to assign to the groups as they finish. Create an alphabet book with your printed out photographs!

When moving into ending sounds, you could photograph objects that end in each letter. Again, there are a couple letters that could prove challenging.

Taking pictures is an exciting activity for children. You may want to require that the neck or wrist strap is always worn in order to keep the camera safer. You will see children engaged in learning when you introduce these types of learning activities.
